HelpAge India was established in 1978 by Mr. Jackson Cole and Samson Daniel as a secular, not-for-profit organization registered under the Societies Registration Act of 1860. Since its inception, the organization has been working tirelessly to protect the rights of India's elderly population and provide relief through various interventions. As one of the founding members of HelpAge International, which represents 97 member countries at the United Nations, HelpAge India became the first Indian NGO to receive the prestigious 2020 UN Population Award for its dedicated service in support of the United Nations Programme on Ageing. The organization serves approximately 2 million disadvantaged elderly people directly and indirectly every year through a wide range of programs. These include mobile healthcare units, cataract surgeries, physiotherapy services, elder self-help groups for income generation, and emergency relief during disasters. HelpAge India mobilizes elders through the formation of Elder Self-Help Groups that are centered on sustainable methods of income generation, currently supporting 7,415 groups with 95,584 elderly members across 16 states. The organization operates helplines at 14567 and 1800-180-1253 to provide immediate assistance to elders in need. For the Indian expat community worldwide, HelpAge India represents a trusted partner for supporting elderly family members back home. The organization voices the needs of India's 100 million plus senior citizens and advocates with national and local government to bring about policy changes that benefit the elderly. Through its comprehensive approach combining relief, rights-based advocacy, and community-driven solutions, HelpAge India helps elders regain their dignity and enjoy an active, healthy life while fighting isolation, poverty, and neglect in old age.
