About
Shree Krishna Mandir in West Bromwich was established in 1971 by Gujarati families who migrated from India and Africa to the West Midlands during the 1960s and 1970s. The temple was created by converting the former Ebenezer Church, built in 1839, into a place of worship, with the adjacent old school building serving as a community hall. In 1974, the temple installed sacred murtis of Shree Shree Radha-Krishna donated by the Birla family, along with deities of Shree Ganeshji and Shree Hanumanji. After a devastating fire in 1992 that miraculously left the Radha-Krishna deities unharmed, the community rallied together to rebuild the temple, demonstrating remarkable resilience and faith. The temple holds a distinctive place in British Hindu history as the only traditional Panchayatan Mandir in the country and was granted Grade II listed building status in 1988. Shree Krishna Mandir serves as an important focal point for Hindus across the West Midlands, offering regular worship services, festival celebrations, and hosting significant life events such as weddings and other rites of passage. The temple played an instrumental role in establishing the Mandhata Hitwardhak Mandal UK, further strengthening community bonds. For Indian expats and the broader Hindu community in West Midlands, Shree Krishna Mandir provides a spiritual home where traditional values and cultural heritage are preserved and celebrated. The temple welcomes devotees for daily worship and special occasions, offering a space for prayer, community gathering, and maintaining connections to Hindu traditions. With its rich history spanning over five decades, the temple continues to serve as a cornerstone of religious and cultural life for generations of families in the region.
