About
The Malayalee Association of Western Australia (MAWA) was established in 1996 as the formal incorporated organisation representing Malayalees—people from Kerala, India's southwestern coastal state known as 'God's Own Country'—across Western Australia. Founded with the vision of providing a forum for Malayalees to share, care, and preserve the spirit of their unique culture and traditions, MAWA has grown into a cornerstone institution for the Kerala diaspora in Perth and beyond. As a non-profit, non-political, and non-religious community organisation, MAWA serves as the official voice of Malayalees in Western Australia and maintains strong international connections through its membership in the World Malayalee Council. MAWA offers a comprehensive range of cultural programmes and community services designed to keep the Malayalam language, Kerala's rich artistic traditions, and cultural heritage alive for Indian expat families. The association organises cultural events, traditional celebrations, and community gatherings that showcase Kerala's distinctive art forms, music, and dance. MAWA provides vital settlement support for new migrants to Western Australia, helping families integrate into Australian life while maintaining their cultural identity. Through educational initiatives, language programmes, and youth engagement activities, the organisation ensures that second-generation Malayalees remain connected to their ancestral roots. MAWA actively collaborates with the Indian Society of Western Australia (ISWA), serving as a bridge between the Indian community and government organisations across the state. For thousands of Malayalee families living in Perth and throughout Western Australia, MAWA represents far more than a cultural association—it is a home away from home where the warmth of Kerala's traditions meets the opportunities of Australian life. The organisation's commitment to fostering multicultural harmony while preserving Malayalam identity has made it an essential pillar of Perth's vibrant Indian expat community. Whether you are a long-established resident or a newly arrived migrant, MAWA welcomes all Malayalees and friends of Kerala to experience the spirit of community, the pride of heritage, and the joy of belonging to a family that spans continents while keeping God's Own Country alive in every heart.
