About
The Canberra Malayalee Association was established in the mid-1990s as an informal organization by Keralites in Australia's capital city to preserve and celebrate Malayalam language and culture. What began with the first Onam celebration in 1996, bringing together thirty Malayalee families, has grown into a thriving community representing hundreds of families from Kerala, other parts of India, and overseas. For nearly three decades, the association has served as the cultural heart of the Malayalam-speaking community in the Australian Capital Territory, creating a bridge between Kerala's rich traditions and life in Australia. The association organizes four major annual gatherings that bring the community together: Onam celebrations showcasing Kerala's harvest festival traditions, Christmas festivities, Cultural Nite featuring performing arts and traditional entertainment, and the popular Malayalee barbecue that blends Australian outdoor culture with community bonding. Beyond cultural events, the association actively promotes sports and recreational activities including cricket through the Canberra Malayalee Cricket Club, soccer, basketball, and badminton, fostering fitness, teamwork, and intergenerational connections. These programmes create opportunities for families to maintain their cultural identity while integrating into the broader Australian multicultural landscape. For Malayalam-speaking families in Canberra, the association represents far more than social gatherings—it is a sanctuary where Kerala's language, traditions, and values are passed to the next generation. Whether you are a long-established resident or newly arrived in the ACT region, the Canberra Malayalee Association offers a welcoming space where cultural heritage thrives, friendships flourish, and the spirit of Kerala lives on. It stands as a testament to the strength of community bonds and the enduring connection Indian expats maintain with their roots while building new lives in Australia.
